gecKo mathematics is a system based on the English translations of a Korean arithmetic series used for grades 1-6 in the national curriculum of Korea in 1993-1996. The translations were produced with permission from the Korean Ministry of Education, and with funding from the National Science Foundation.
Block Learning and Conceptualization: Foundations of gecKo mathematics
In gecKo mathematics, constructs are built on a foundation of blocks. As each function is introduced, its relation to previously learned mathematics functions is developed. Concepts are developed in-depth all in one place. Procedures are tied to the underlying mathematical principles.
For example, division is learned in Grade 2-2. During this lesson, the previously learned concepts of dividing into equal parts and repeated subtraction are used to develop a focus on the inverse relationship between multiplication and division.

Each level of gecKo mathematics contains a concise manual to guide teachers through 9 or 10 units of instruction on the same 5 domains recommended by the NCTM as important school content. Each unit or chapter in gecKo mathematics contains 6 to 10 fully developed lessons.
